Black ancestors and contemporaries have always been leaders―and continue to lead―in the sustainable agriculture and food justice movements, but unfortunately these contributions have been erased and invisibilized. Highlighting them is vital, particularly in an era where the relationship black people have to food and the land is one traumatized by farmland loss, farm worker exploitation, food apartheid, and an epidemic of diet-related illnesses that plague black communities and other communities of color. Tools to center these legacies, start agricultural projects, and heal from the trauma associated with slavery and land-based economic exploitation are provided by Leah Penniman in Farming While Black. Farming While Black is the first comprehensive “how to” guide for aspiring African-heritage growers to reclaim their dignity as agriculturists and for all farmers to understand the distinct, technical contributions of African-heritage people to sustainable agriculture. Uplifting the legacy of African diasporic knowledge and farming technologies while acknowledging the fact that our food system is built on stolen land and stolen labor is necessary for developing ways to reform this system and reframe narratives around it.
